Forgotten Premier League star Loris Karius makes Newcastle debut then fires warning to former club Liverpool

LOR-RA LOVE LORIS KARIUS finally made his Newcastle United debut last night – and sent out a fierce warning to former club Liverpool and their rivals afterwards.

The 29-year-old German goalkeeper joined the Magpies in September as a replacement for Martin Dubravka who left for Manchester United on loan.

He has yet to appear for the club competitively but did get his maiden run out for Toon on Thursday.

Karius celebrated with a clean sheet as Newcastle hammered Al-Hilal 5-0 in a friendly while on tour in Saudi Arabia.

Joelinton and Miguel Almiron grabbed braces while youngster Dylan Stephenson also got on the scoresheet.

And following the game he was adamant that he wants to stay beyond his short-term deal and outlined his confidence that the club could cost Liverpool a Champions League place by finishing in the top four themselves.

The North East side are currently third in the Premier League and eight points clear of the sixth-placed Reds.

Karius told Newcastle’s website: “We have no limit, to be honest.

“It’s important we get a good start… and I’m positive we can achieve great things this season.

“I think the group has such a strong togetherness that’s very unique – and that’s what makes me positive that we will carry on the way we started before the break.”

Karius began his career at Mainz but is best remembered for his time at Anfield, where he made 49 appearances, including making howlers in the Champions League final in 2018.

They lost 3-1 to Real Madrid, with the German at fault for two goals after infamously throwing the ball out for it to deflect off Karim Benzema before fumbling Gareth Bale’s long range strike.

He was subsequently loaned out to Besiktas and spent last season away at Union Berlin before heading to Newcastle on a free when his Liverpool contract expired.

On his future, Karius added: “We’re going to have some talks and see what we’re going to do, but of course I can see myself here for longer and push [on] and hopefully get some more appearances in the future – also competitive.

“That’s my aim, that’s what I’m working for every day and, at the same time, I’m supporting all the other guys.

“I think there’s a good chance I can stay here longer, but we’ll have to have that discussion over the next [few] weeks.”
