David Moyes fears he could be sacked if West Ham lose to Southampton

And while the Hammers have home advantage, defeat could see supporters turn on Moyes and call for his dismissal.

Sources close to Moyes and his coaching staff fear that could happen, report the Daily Mail.

The main concern is that fan backlash could persuade chairman David Sullivan to act.

Sullivan, 74, revealed earlier this month that he still has faith in Moyes and his coaching staff to steer the team away from the drop zone.

But a loss on Saturday would see Saints leapfrog the Hammers in the league, possibly leaving them bottom if Bournemouth beat Fulham.

And with a tricky fixture list that includes games against Newcastle, Fulham and Arsenal up next, Sullivan’s faith in Moyes could wane.

West Ham’s success in the Europa Conference League has helped to ease pressure on the Scot.

The Irons have won ten out of ten in the competition and a triumph in June would see them qualify for the Europa League.

But Sullivan could be forced to act if he views relegation as a big risk, with former Liverpool and Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez linked to the job.

Former Tottenham and Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo is another name believed to be under consideration.
